Details, formula, and sources

ScopeDisplacement at the light and loaded drafts, cargo carried, tons per inch of immersion, freeboard, and the draft the same load produces in fresh water. The worked deck barge carries 1,349 tons at 17.3 tons/in and floats 2.5 in deeper up a river. Freeboard is reserve buoyancy, not spare capacity.

Formula or tabledisplacement = L x B x draft x Cb x water density / 2,000; TPI = L x B x Cb x density / (12 x 2,000); fresh-water draft = displacement x 2,000 / (L x B x Cb x fresh density).

Source and editionArchimedes, with 64.0 lb/cu ft sea water and 62.4 lb/cu ft fresh. The barge's capacity plan, its load line, and its stability booklet govern.

Free accessPublic hydrostatics; the vessel's own capacity plan is the controlling document.

What governsVessel master governs. Verify against the stability letter and USCG-approved loading manual.
