Earthwork Volume (End-Area)
Average-end-area and prismoidal earthwork volume in cubic feet and yards.
Example
You enter
- End areas (ft², comma-separated) 100, 100
- Station interval (ft) 100
You get
- Total volume 10000
- Total yd3 370.37
Details, formula, and sources
Average end area V = (L/2)*(A1 + A2); prismoidal V = (L/6)*(A1 + 4*Am + A2); yd^3 = ft^3 / 27; adjusted volume = V * swell/shrink factor.
The average-end-area and prismoidal earthwork-volume methods per the FHWA and state-DOT earthwork references and FM 5-233, by name; first-principles.
FM 5-233 is public-domain US Government work. Compaction swell/shrink factors are material- and spec-specific and user-supplied; the project earthwork report governs the paid quantity.
Estimate. Engineer of record governs the design and acceptance. Verify against the project structural drawings and the manufacturer's published capacity / chart.
