Dry Hop Absorption and Beer Loss
Computes hop weight, beer absorbed, and packages lost for a dry-hop rate, beside a heavier rate.
Example
You enter
- Batch volume (gal) 310
- Dry-hop rate (lb per barrel) 2
- Hop absorption (gal per lb) 1
- Package size (gal) 15.5
- Revenue per package ($) 175
- Heavier rate to compare (lb per barrel) 4
You get
- Hop weight (lb) 20
- Beer absorbed 20
- Loss (%) 6.45161
- In packages 1.29
- At the heavier rate 40
- Heavy loss (%) 12.9032
- Heavy packages lost 2.58065

Details, formula, and sources
ScopeThe worked 10 bbl batch at 2 lb/bbl loses 20 gal, 6.5% of the batch. At 4 lb/bbl it loses 40 gal, 12.9% -- exactly double, 2.58 half barrels of the most expensive beer in the brewery.
Formula or tablehops = rate x barrels (31 gal); absorbed = hops x gal per lb; packages lost = absorbed / package size.
Source and editionPellets retain roughly 0.5 to 1.5 gal per lb. The brewery's own measured absorption governs.
