Service Load Calculation (NEC 220.82 Optional Method)
Optional-method dwelling demand (first 10 kVA at 100% + remainder at 40% + larger HVAC), compared to the standard 220.42 method.
Formula and source
General load demand = first 10 kVA at 100% + remainder at 40%, where general load = 3 VA/ft^2 + 1500 VA per small-appliance and laundry circuit + nameplate of fixed appliances, range, dryer, water heater. HVAC larger of heating vs cooling added at 100% (220.82(C)).
NEC 2023 (NFPA 70). 220.82 (optional dwelling load calculation); 220.42 (standard method) for the comparison.
