Texture coverage is not one number, and treating it as one is the whole reason this calculation exists. A light orange peel spreads thin and covers a great deal per bag; a heavy knockdown or a splatter-and-trowel covers a fraction of that; a popcorn ceiling texture is different again because it goes on thick and dry. Between the lightest and heaviest common textures the coverage ratio is three to one or more, which on a house-sized job is the difference between eight bags and twenty-five. A 2,400 sq ft ceiling at a knockdown covering 225 sq ft per 40 lb bag takes 12 bags with 10 percent waste; change nothing but the texture and a heavy splatter at 120 sq ft per bag takes 22 while a light orange peel at 350 takes 8. That is the range a single remembered figure is trying to cover, and it is why the coverage rate has to come from the product bag rather than from memory. Water matters for a reason beyond ordering: mix ratio controls consistency, consistency controls the texture pattern, and a bag mixed wetter than the last one produces a visibly different wall, so the water is reported alongside the bags to be measured rather than eyeballed. Quantity only. Coverage per bag is a manufacturer figure that assumes a specific spray pattern, nozzle, and pressure, and the same bag over a heavier hand covers substantially less -- the operator is a bigger variable than the product. This does not select a texture, match an existing one (which is a sample-board exercise and often the hardest part of a repair), address primer and sealer requirements before or after texture, cover the knockdown timing window that decides whether the pattern flattens correctly, or take off the equipment, masking, and protection the job needs. Ceiling textures applied before the late 1970s may contain asbestos and are a regulated material that must be tested before disturbance -- that is a survey and abatement question, not a takeoff one.
